Sickle Cell Disease Advocacy

Maroon 9 Community Enrichment Organization advocates for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) awareness through the arts, honoring the memory of Michael Patterson, brother of our Founder, Cynthia Nobles. By combining creative expression with education, Maroon 9 engages communities and reduces stigma around SCD. Through performances and art programs, we give voice to SCD experiences, making complex health issues relatable and inspiring empathy. Maroon 9 also offers scholarships and resources to affected families, dedicating September to awareness events and art-centered advocacy. Our mission is to foster understanding, support research, and bring hope to those impacted by SCD.

Why The Arts?

“The arts are not a frill. The arts are a response to our individuality and our nature, and help to shape our identity.”
— Dr. Shirley Brice Heath, Stanford University

The arts are a powerful catalyst for academic achievement, personal growth, and community development. Decades of research confirm that sustained engagement in arts education directly supports improved outcomes in core academic areas, particularly literacy.

Data-Driven Benefits:

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students involved in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and three times more likely to win school attendance awards.
    (Source: Arts Education Partnership)

  • Literacy Development: Arts participation—especially in drama, music, and visual arts—has been shown to significantly enhance vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing proficiency.
(Source: National Endowment for the Arts)

  • Brain Development: Engaging in creative processes stimulates neural pathways that are critical for problem-solving, emotional regulation, and language acquisition.

  • College and Career Readiness: Young people who engage in the arts are more likely to attend college and pursue career paths that require innovation, communication, and critical thinking skills.

Equity and Engagement:

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
— Pablo Picasso

In underserved communities, access to arts education narrows opportunity gaps and provides students with a safe space to explore identity, build confidence, and improve behavior. Arts-based programs support holistic development and offer alternative avenues for expression that are especially valuable for students facing academic or social challenges.

The Literacy Connection:

Arts instruction, particularly in storytelling, theatre, and poetry, has a profound impact on literacy:

  • Students who participate in drama show higher reading comprehension and more confident oral expression.

  • Visual arts encourage interpretation and narrative skills—key components of literacy development.

  • Music education enhances phonological awareness, an essential pre-literacy skill for young learners.
